November 2018 Alumni News and Highlights
Issue No. 21: November 2018

Reunited in the Windy City
On November 8, the Medical Alumni Association hosted an alumni get-together at Davanti Enoteca in the Illinois Medical District. We had a fantastic turnout thanks to MAA Board members, Jeff Schaider ’83, ’85 MD, and Javier Guevara, Jr., ’12 MD, who helped us to get the word out on this event!

It was so much fun meeting new friends and reconnecting with alumni in the Chicago area. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Cheering on the Wildcats
The M'Cats had a strong showing at Ryan Field on November 3 for our Medical Alumni Tailgate and Game. Alumni descended on the stadium to meet up with friends and watch Northwestern take on Notre Dame.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats didn't take home a win that day, but we had lots of fun cheering them on from the Randy Walker Terrace. Let’s go ‘Cats!

AAMC: Alums in Austin
On November 4, Feinberg hosted a get-together for alumni and friends of the medical school in Austin, Texas, for those who were in attendance at the Association of American Medical Colleges Conference.

We’re pleased to share our favorite photo from the event featuring (pictured right to left) Diane Wayne '88, '91 MD, John Cluley, MD, ’12 GMER, and Dr. Cluley’s adorable little wildcat, Cannon (who is proudly sporting Northwestern purple). Welcome to the Feinberg family, Cannon!

Alumni Recognition

Joseph A. Adashek, MD, FACOG, '93 GMER, became president of the Clark County Medical Society in July 2017, which includes all of Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada. On behalf of the doctors of Clark County, he accepted numerous awards over the past year for the treatment of those injured during the deadliest mass shooting in United States history, which took place in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017. In a 10-minute span, there were more than 400 patients with gunshot wounds, and every patient presented to the emergency room alive survived. Physicians throughout the city presented to the emergency rooms to assist in the care. We would like to recognize Dr. Adashek and all the doctors and staff of the Clark County Medical Society for their remarkable strength, resilience, and dedication to their patients.
Chuck Peterson, ’98 MD (left), a medical consultant for the Chicago Cubs during their spring training in Mesa, Arizona, and Stephen Gryzlo, MD, ’90 GMER (right), the team’s head orthopaedic surgeon in Chicago, Illinois, proudly pose with their sons, Josh and Dan, at Feinberg’s Founders’ Day ceremony this summer. Josh and Dan are both members of Feinberg’s Class of 2022. Congratulations, Peterson and Gryzlo families!
Jane Schwebke, ’84 MD, ’87 GMER, was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of Talis Biomedical Corpation. Dr. Schwebke has been a faculty member at the University of Alabama for over 20 years. Congratulations, Dr. Schwebke!
Nick Retson ’71, ’75 MD, a facial reconstruction surgeon, was featured in the Chicago Tribune for his work helping children with physical abnormalities around the world. He has organized 50 medical mission trips to several countries and was recently awarded the humanitarian award by the Indian Medical Association of Northwest Indiana. Congratulations, Dr. Retson!
Jeanette Bauchat, ’02 MD, ’03 GMER, ’07 GMEF, ’16 MS, has joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Bauchat was recently profiled on their website and described the journey that led to her new appointment as associate professor of anesthesiology. Read the full article here. Congratulations, Dr. Bauchat!

Raymond Sanchez '84, '94 MD, was recently profiled in Pharm Exec's "Emerging Pharma Leaders 2018." From the Director's Desk:
Dear Alumni,

I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are enjoying the holiday season! We held two popular events in November—a tailgate party for the Northwestern vs. Notre Dame game on November 3, and a lively happy hour in the Illinois Medical District at Davanti Enoteca on November 8. Both events garnered a great group of alumni! We are starting off the new year with an event in Washington, DC, on January 23 at Baby Wale. Additionally, on January 2, we are opening up registration for Alumni Weekend 2019 (April 26—27), so please save the date and look for more updates in the coming months.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments. We love to hear from our alumni!

Thank you,
