The MAA in Pennsylvania
In September, the MAA took over Pennsylvania, hosting events in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh! A big thank you to our gracious alumni hosts—Christina Clay ’83, ’85 MD, and Tom Ramsey hosted alumni in their Philadelphia home, and Ritu Thamman ’88, ’91 MD, welcomed alumni in her Pittsburgh home.

MAA Board Member Honored By Northwestern
Congratulations to MAA Board member and former MAA Board president Bruce F. Scharschmidt ’68, ’70 MD, a 2018 recipient of the prestigious Service to Northwestern Award. The award is presented annually by the Northwestern Alumni Association in recognition of leadership and service excellence to an alumni group, school or unit, or other University associated program. As MAA president, Dr. Scharschmidt reorganized and revitalized the Medical Alumni Association National Board. He currently sits on the Board’s executive committee, sponsors medical students to attend Northwestern football games, and helps lead mentoring and entrepreneurship initiatives. Dr. Scharschmidt is an independent director, co-founder, and consultant to biotechnology companies.

We thank you for your dedicated service, Dr. Scharschmidt, and congratulate you on this well-deserved award!

Congrats Are in Order!

A double round of congratulations are in order for Sheridan Lam ’82, ’84 MD. Dr. Lam, an ophthalmologist, recently published an essay in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) titled “Blinded by Sight,” which tells the story of a unique experience he encountered in restoring one of his patient’s sight. Dr. Lam’s full JAMA article can be found here. Additionally, Dr. Lam recently became a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder. To earn the highly covered CFA charter, one must pass a series of three exams administered by the CFA Institute. Dr. Lam’s lifelong interest in finance and economics has culminated in this tremendous achievement. Congratulations, Dr. Lam!
Joanne C. Smith, MD, ’92 GMER, was featured in an article titled "The Most Powerful Women in Chicago Business" in Crain’s Chicago Business. Dr. Smith is the chief executive officer of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. Read the full profile on Dr. Smith here. Congratulations, Dr. Smith!
Maulik Majmudar, ’04 MD, has been hired by Amazon as the company broadens its involvement in the healthcare industry. Dr. Majmudar, a cardiologist, has been working as associate director of the Healthcare Transformation Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, a lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, and a medical adviser at Biofourmis. Congratulations, Dr. Majmudar!
Janet Woodcock, ’77 MD, has been appointed by the United States Government Accountability Office to the governing board of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute. Dr. Woodcock is director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the United Stated Food and Drug Administration. Congratulations, Dr. Woodcock!

Richard A. Moscicki ’74, ’76 MD, has been appointed to the board of directors of KSQ Therapeutics, a drug development company. Dr. Moscicki serves as executive vice president for science and regulatory advocacy, as well as chief medical officer at Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. Congratulations, Dr. Moscicki!
Melanie M. Novak, ’86 MD, ’90 GMER, has joined Jagannathan Neurosurgery, a neurosurgery, neurology, and pain management practice with five offices throughout Michigan. Previously, Dr. Novak was with PCA Pain Care Center in Battle Creek, Michigan. Congratulations, Dr. Novak!
Larry O. Sy, MD, ’94 GMER, has joined Mercyhealth Roscoe, an urgent care center in Roscoe, Illinois. Dr. Sy is an internal medicine physician. Congratulations, Dr. Sy!

Happy fall! We had some wonderful events in Pennsylvania this month. We held alumni mixers in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
