Celebrating 150 Years of Women in Medicine at Northwestern |
Did You Know?Mary Harris Thompson, MD, was the first woman to earn her medical degree from the Chicago Medical College (Northwestern University). She was the founder of the Chicago Hospital for Women and Children, the first hospital staffed by female physicians and devoted to women’s and children’s health, and the Woman’s Hospital Medical College, which filled the educational gap for hundreds of women who earned medical degrees. Thompson specialized in pelvic and abdominal surgery and invented a widely-used abdominal needle. She became a professor in 1870, and she was the first woman surgeon in Chicago and one of the most famous surgeons—male or female—in the country at that time. |
