The Medical Alumni Association hosted alumni get-togethers in both New York City and Boston this summer. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and also meet so many new fantastic alumni on the East Coast! We had a fabulous turnout for both of these events. Check out our NYC and Boston photo albums, and then plan to meet us at our next alumni gathering. Thank you to everyone who joined us! |
Remembering Dr. Betty Hahneman |
We mourn the loss of Betty M. Hahneman, ’52 MD, ‘56 GMER, beloved member of the medical school family, who passed away on July 23.

Dr. Hahneman's long and storied career at Northwestern began when she entered the medical school 72 years ago—one of only eight women in her 128 person class. After completing her residency at Wesley Memorial Hospital and a hematology fellowship at Washington University in Saint Louis, she returned to Wesley, practicing internal medicine and hematology there. Dr. Hahneman continued practicing in Chicago for over 30 years at various health centers and hospitals in the area, serving in departmental leadership roles at some of those institutions, until she retired to South Carolina with her late husband Leonard H. Kolb, MD, in 1983. It was there that she developed a passion for public health, and obtained her Master of Public Health degree from the University of South Carolina in 1989. After Dr. Kolb’s passing, Dr. Hahneman once again returned home to Northwestern, serving as adjunct associate professor of Preventive Medicine at Feinberg and helping to develop the medical school’s Program in Public Health. A Northwestern Alumni Association service award winner, Dr. Hahneman was an avid supporter of her alma mater, serving as an MAA board member and creating the Betty M. Hahneman, MD, MPH Scholarship Fund at Feinberg. In a 2018 interview with Northwestern Medicine Magazine, when asked what advice she had for young alumni just starting their careers in medicine, Dr. Hahneman shared that “it’s difficult to give advice because medicine has changed so much, but I would say that it’s important to continue learning. You should always be open to doing new and different things.”
Fondly remembered by decades of Northwestern medical students, Dr. Hahneman’s legacy at Feinberg will live on for generations to come, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Dr. Hahneman was 91 years old.

The Medical Alumni Association was proud to host the 2019 Society Olympics on August 23. Medical students from each of the four medical student societies (Lawless, Thompson, Ricketts, and Cooper) competed against each other in various physical and mental challenges to determine who would take home the trophy—and the glory! See more photos from Society Olympics. Congratulations to the Thompson Society (in blue t-shirts) for their epic win at this year’s games! |

Dear Alumni, We hope that your summer has been enjoyable and productive! We have had a busy summer in the Alumni Engagement office. We held very successful alumni mixer events in New York City (near NYU Langone Medical Center) and in Boston (near Massachusetts General Hospital). Both events were well attended and were a great way for alumni to network and reconnect with colleagues and former classmates. We hope that you will consider attending an event in the upcoming months. We are planning events in Birmingham, MI (September 26), Philadelphia, PA (October 3), and Phoenix, AZ (November 10). For more details, please reach out to me directly or look for updates in the newsletter.
Thank you, Babette
