Arizona: Music & Medicine | Cubs Spring Training

Phoenix Dinner
Music in Medicine
Cubs Game

On March 1–3, the MAA welcomed alumni from across the country for a very special weekend in Arizona. We kicked off the slate of events over dinner with alumni and friends in Phoenix.

The next day, the party continued at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix with “A Night with Northwestern: Music and Medicine.” Held in partnership with Bienen School of Music, panelists Sarah J. Bartolome ’02 MMus, PhD, associate professor, Bienen School of Music; Borna Bonakdarpour, MD, associate professor of Neurology (Behavorial Neurology), Feinberg; and Bharath Chandrasekaran, PhD, department chair, Communication Sciences and Disorders, School of Communication explored the effect that music has on your health throughout your life. Dean Jonathan Bailey Holland of Bienen School of Music moderated the event.

The following day, we were thrilled to watch the Chicago Cubs take on the Cleveland Guardians for our

annual spring training game at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona. The Cubbies led us to a 5-3 victory over the Guardians. A great day for the home team!

We appreciate everyone who made the trip out to the museum and ballpark. Mark your calendars and be sure to join us next year!

Chicago: WIM Conference

WIM Conference Photos

On March 8, women across the Northwestern Medicine community gathered both in-person and virtually for the 6th annual Northwestern Women in Medicine conference. This year’s theme, “Empowering Success,” explored how women in medicine face unique challenges and obstacles throughout their professional careers.

These challenges may affect leadership development and opportunities for women in medicine resulting in a gender gap in the governance of academic medical centers. Panelists facilitated conversations that reviewed data, identified barriers and facilitators, and discussed tools to support and promote the development of leaders who identify as women and sexual/gender minorities. The conference sought to highlight the role of allies in creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work environment. Learn more in the Feinberg News Center

The Women in Medicine committee of your Northwestern Medical Alumni Association Board was pleased to co-host the event, and welcome alumni and friends at the evening’s cocktail reception.

Thank you to all the women in medicine who attended this annual event!

Brooklyn: NCAA March Madness

On March 22, the Northwestern Wildcats made their third March Madness appearance, taking on Florida Atlantic University, and you can bet that your Medical Alumni Association (MAA) was in Brooklyn, New York, to help cheer on the ’Cats!

Before the N Zone Pep Rally and NCAA game, the MAA hosted alumni, friends, family, and supporters for a meet-and-greet breakfast near the Barclays Center. Everyone’s Purple Pride was on display as the Wildcats celebrated a 77-65 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls.

Sadly, the ’Cats were defeated in the second round of the tournament by the Connecticut Huskies, but what a ride this season was.

Thanks to all the M’Cats who came out to support and celebrate!

MAA Digital Series:

Hosted by Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD

“The Furniture Mart and the Woman’s World’s Fair”

Gugenheim Recording Screenshot

We’re thrilled to bring you the newest installment of our MAA Digital Series, from our fantastic host and historian, alum Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD.

In observance of Women’s History Month, Dr. Gugenheim’s March episode allows you to take a step back in time to the Roaring Twenties to explore the origins of the Furniture Mart and the Woman’s World’s Fair. Lake Shore Place, the noteworthy brown building with the blue tower across the street from Abbott Hall, may be recognizable to alumni—especially those who called Abbott Hall home while in medical school. This location holds an important place in both Chicago and women’s history as it was the site of the Woman’s World’s Fairs of 1925 and 1926—fairs created, organized, and run entirely by women.

Thank you, Dr. Gugenheim!

COMING SOON!

Join Dr. Gugenheim in May for a sequel to our MAA Digital Series fan favorite, “Who’s Who in the Northwestern Neighborhood.” This spring marks four years since we launched the MAA Digital Series with our resident host and historian, Dr. Joseph Gugenheim. Our inaugural episode, “Who’s Who in the Northwestern Neighborhood,” quickly became an alumni must-see. Some were even fortunate enough to see this presentation live at Alumni Weekend 2022! In this exciting follow-up, alumni will learn more about the individuals behind some of the most iconic names of the Chicago medical campus—Foster McGaw and Alexander McClurg, as well as the Searle and the Lavin families. Mark your calendars for May as we celebrate four years of this beloved series!

Catch up on all previous episodes of our MAA Digital Series on our MAA website and YouTube channel.

Exercise is good for you...but what exactly should you do to age well? We all know we should exercise, but what's the exact "prescription" to age well–our research is helping define that.
