MAA Digital Series:
Hosted by Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD
|
“Hollywood on the Lake: A Tribute to John Hughes—Part II”
|
We’re thrilled to bring you the newest installment of our MAA Digital Series, from our fantastic host and historian, alum Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD.
Movie enthusiasts rejoice! We invite you to check out this outstanding conclusion to our two-part series. If you were unable to attend Dr. Gugenheim’s popular Alumni Weekend presentation that was held on campus in the Hughes Auditorium, then pop some popcorn and settle in for this month’s episode.
|
At the turn of the twentieth century and for the next two decades, Chicago was the movie capital of the world. The US had an insatiable love of this new entertainment medium. Movie theaters arose to show films, as audiences fell in love with early screen stars. After two decades of its rapid rise, the industry left Chicago and moved to Hollywood. Many factors were to blame for the move, including the weather, Thomas Edison, and censorship. Although a few landmark films continued to be produced in Chicago, it was not until the 1980s that Chicago regained its importance in movie production. John Hughes was largely responsible for this revival of the film industry in Chicago. This two-part presentation traces the history of the movie industry in Chicago from the late nineteenth century, through the Hughes era, to the present day.
Dr. Gugenheim presents “Hollywood on the Lake: A Tribute to John Hughes—Part II.”
Thank you, Dr. Gugenheim!

Coming in January 2024!

A Night With Northwestern in Houston: Frontiers of the Brain
|
On December 6, in collaboration with the Northwestern Alumni Association, we hosted “A Night with Northwestern” in Houston, Texas, and welcomed alumni and guests for an excellent presentation: “Frontiers of the Brain.” Alfred L. George, Jr., MD, chair of the Department of Pharmacology; director of the Center for Pharmacogenomics; and the Alfred Newton Richards Professor of Pharmacology, along with Sachin Patel, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; the Lizzie Gilman Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; and professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Division of General Psychiatry led the presentation. At Houston’s Post Oak Hotel, they shared recent advances in neuroscience and what lies ahead for research on brain health. After the presentation, several alumni and friends joined us for dinner to continue the conversation. We invite you to check out photos from the event.
We love our Houston alumni! Thank you to all who joined us.

Alumni Physician Assistants of Feinberg
|
Thank you to Ann Cameron Schieber ’09, ’13 MMS who led a special Alumni Physician Assistants of Feinberg session for our physician assistant (PA) students on December 5.
The PA students were eager to ask PA Cameron Schieber questions about her schooling and career. She shared that it’s important for the students to “put themselves out there” and encouraged collaboration with physicians and other colleagues.
We’re grateful to Ann Cameron Schieber for sharing her time, insights, and experiences with our PA students.
For more information on this event and our other mentoring programs, contact Allison Glibowski at allison.glibowski@northwestern.edu.

Want to Connect with Our Students?
|
We are looking to increase our alumni participation for our Virtual Heart-to-Hearts mentoring program. This program connects Feinberg students with alumni mentors for informal and invaluable conversations and guidance. Oftentimes students will reach out to ask questions about different career paths, residency programs, clinical away rotations, or specialty choices. The time commitment is short, the profile is easy to set up, and the connections made are meaningful for both students and alumni alike. Please submit or update your profile to allow our current students to reach out to you for advice.
Questions? Please contact Allison Glibowski at allison.glibowski@northwestern.edu.
To learn more and sign up, visit our Virtual Heart-to-Hearts website.
