Alumni Weekend 2023:

A Celebration in Chicago!

Alumni Weekend

Thank you to the over 500 alumni, guests, faculty, students, and staff who joined us for Alumni Weekend 2023!

Congratulations to all our milestone reunion classes. It was an honor to celebrate our Half Century Club members and to induct the Class of 1973, our 50-year reunion class, into the Half Century Club. We were also thrilled to recognize alumni in the classes of 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2018.

This jam-packed weekend was marked by a number of highlights. Our Office of Diversity and Inclusion kicked off Alumni Weekend with an outstanding 20-Year Celebration Reception. Our wonderful faculty-led forums and campus tours were enjoyed by so many of our returning alumni. Current students and alumni had the opportunity to connect at our annual Mentoring Lunch and Women in Medicine Tea. Alumni dined, laughed, and enjoyed one another’s company on Friday night at Celebrate in Chicago, our all-alumni party. Our Commitment to Scholarship Luncheon and The Founders Society Reception honored our incredible alumni donors and scholarship supporters. The weekend culminated in our Half Century Club and Reunion class dinners on Saturday night where alumni and friends made memories that will last a lifetime.

We hope that you enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with classmates and reminisce about your time spent on our beautiful Chicago campus. Read more about Alumni Weekend in the Feinberg News Center. If you couldn’t make it back to Chicago, or if you simply want to relive the memories from that weekend, view our Alumni Weekend Photo Album.

MAA Digital Series:

Hosted by Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD

“Hollywood on the Lake: A Tribute to John Hughes—Part I”

Gugenheim Recording Screenshot

We’re thrilled to bring you the newest installment of our MAA Digital Series, from our fantastic host and historian, alum Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD.

Movie enthusiasts rejoice! If you were unable to attend Dr. Gugenheim’s popular Alumni Weekend presentation that was held on campus in the Hughes Auditorium, then pop some popcorn and settle in for this month’s episode—the first of a two-part series.

Dr. Gugenheim in Front of Hughes

At the turn of the twentieth century and for the next two decades, Chicago was the movie capital of the world. The US had an insatiable love of this new entertainment medium. Movie theaters arose to show films, as audiences fell in love with early screen stars. After two decades of its rapid rise, the industry left Chicago and moved to Hollywood. Many factors were to blame for the move, including the weather, Thomas Edison, and censorship. Although a few landmark films continued to be produced in Chicago, it was not until the 1980s that Chicago regained its importance in movie production. John Hughes was largely responsible for this revival of the film industry in Chicago. This two-part presentation will trace the history of the movie industry in Chicago from the late nineteenth century, through the Hughes era, to the present day.

Alumni Student Connections

Last month, two of our amazing alumni took time out of their busy schedules to host mentoring opportunities for our students.

Dinners with a Doc

Thank you to Arjun K. Venkatesh ’02, ’08 MD, who in the middle of his 15th reunion made time to mentor our medical students. Dr. Venkatesh hosted a group of students for a special “Breakfast with a Doc.” The Dinners with a Doc program has been a highlight for so many of our medical students over the years. These intimate affairs typically pair 4-6 students with an alumni physician and allow students to learn more about daily work and lives outside of medicine, as well as how to make the most of their medical school, residency, and fellowship training. MD students gain invaluable insight from seasoned alumni physicians, who, in turn, learn from students about the current state of their medical alma matter.

Thank you to Dr. Venkatesh for creating this wonderful opportunity for our students!

Alumni Physicians of Feinberg

Thank you to Captain Brian Lewis, ’86 MD, who kicked off our 2023/2024 Alumni Physicians of Feinberg season with an outstanding mentoring session for our students. The Alumni Physicians of Feinberg is an innovative program that unites alumni and faculty with students who want to learn about the lives of physicians—how they made their specialty choice, what they do day-to-day, how they balance work, family, and life, lessons they have learned, and what they would do differently throughout their careers.

Dr. Lewis recently retired from the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in October 2023 and will continue his work for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a civilian. Congratulations to Captain Lewis on your retirement, and thank you for sharing your time and talents with our students!

To learn more about how to get involved with our student mentoring opportunities, please contact Allison Glibowski at allison.glibowski@northwestern.edu.

Grand Rounds with Dr. Stahl

Feinberg’s Founders and First Professors

Feinberg’s Founders and First Professors

In honor of his 60th reunion, James Conway, ’63 MD, recently donated the Frank Andrews Photograph Collection to the Galter Health Sciences Library and Learning Center Special Collections department. The collection contains the earliest known photographs of the first faculty of the medical school.

“The Andrews family was integral to the establishment and early success of the medical school. Patriarch Edmund Andrews was a member of the small group of faculty that fractured from Rush Medical College in order to form a medical school with academically rigorous requirements. This group’s endeavor resulted in the founding of the Medical Department of Lind University in 1859, the earliest incarnation of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Edmund was a talented and pioneering surgeon, and he served as professor of Surgery at the school for forty-six years. His sons Frank and E. Wyllys Andrews were both graduates of the school—called Chicago Medical College at that time—and served on the faculty, as well: Frank in Gynecology and Wyllys in Surgery. The bulk of the new collection consists of photographs and postcards from the family of Frank Andrews. It complements our existing Andrews family collections, including medical tools from Edmund Andrews and case books and medical instruments from E. Wyllys Andrews.”

To learn more about the collection, visit Galter Library’s website. Thank you to Dr. Conway for this incredible gift, and congratulations on celebrating your 60th reunion!
