Alumni Get-Togethers in Colorful Colorado and the Treasure State

In honor of their upcoming reunions, MAA Board members Emily Jones, ’08 MD, ’11 GMER, and Doug Carr ’76, ’78 MD, each hosted local alumni get-togethers in their towns.

Denver Dinner

On August 8, in celebration of her upcoming 15th reunion, Dr. Jones invited alumni and friends of the medical school to gather together with fellow Denver, Colorado-area alumni. Additionally, as chair of the MAA Mentoring Committee, Dr. Jones works to connect regional alumni across the country with ongoing mentoring opportunities at Feinberg.

Billings Dinner

On August 9, in celebration of his upcoming 45th reunion, Dr. Carr hosted alumni and friends for dinner in Billings, Montana. The group had a fantastic time reconnecting and making new friends. Plans are even being made for future engagements. Dr. Carr is a past president of the Medical Alumni Association.

Thank you to Drs. Jones and Carr for once again hosting gatherings for our regional alumni, and congratulations on your milestone reunions!

Society Olympics 2023

Society Olympics

The Ricketts Society—Society Olympics champions for the third year in a row.

The Medical Alumni Association was proud to once again participate in this year’s Society Olympics on August 18. Medical students from each of the four medical student societies (Ricketts, Lawless, Thompson, and Cooper) competed against each other in various physical and mental challenges to determine who would take home the glory.

The Ricketts Society (pictured above) took home the Feinberg Cup after an epic win at this year’s games. This hat trick marks the third consecutive Society Olympics win for them. Way to go, Ricketts!

Make-A-Wish: “Doctor-For-A-Day”

Make-A-Wish Simulated Surgery

Twelve-year-old Melanie Rodriguez Romo, a Make-A-Wish participant and kidney transplant recipient, recently experienced a day as a doctor—the first wish of its kind granted in Illinois by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“During her recent two-day Make-A-Wish visit at Northwestern and Lurie Children’s, Melanie received her medical school letter of acceptance and jumped right into pursuing her dream. She participated in simulated patient care, learning how to perform CPR, cast a broken arm, intubate a simulated patient, and suture a simulated wound. During a graduation ceremony, Melanie received her white coat and medical school diploma.”

Melanie even had the opportunity to perform a simulated surgery to remove a simulated patient’s gallstones, made possible by Northwestern Simulation. Way to go, Melanie!
