MAA Digital Series:

Hosted by Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD

“Candy Corn and the Vanishing Heiress: The Story of Brach’s Candy and Helen Brach”

Gugenheim Recording Screenshot

We’re thrilled to bring you the newest installment of our MAA Digital Series, from our fantastic host and historian, alum Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD.

In celebration of National Junk Food Day on July 21, Dr. Gugenheim explores the origins of candy making in the Windy City. One of the notable names to revolutionize the industry is one that many may recognize—the Brach family. What once started as a small sweets shop in Lincoln Park eventually grew to become the company whose countless confections line store shelves to this very day.

Not everything may be as sweet as it seems for the longtime Chicago mainstay and purveyors of iconic classics such as candy corn though. The legacy of the Brach’s Candy Company is marred by the mystery that surrounds its vanishing heiress, Helen Brach. While questions abound, Dr. Gugenheim doesn’t sugarcoat the possible explanations.

Dr. Gugenheim presents “Candy Corn and the Vanishing Heiress: The Story of Brach’s Candy and Helen Brach.

Thank you, Dr. Gugenheim!

THE STORY OF BRACH’S CANDY AND HELEN BRACH”

COMING SOON!

Next month’s episode, the first in a two-part series, hearkens back to days gone by as Dr. Gugenheim unearths Chicago’s “Dinosaur Hospitals.” Some with origins as far back as the 1800s, a surprising number of these Chicago hospitals have come and gone. While most changed hands and/or shuttered their doors, very few of these locations have stood the test of time.

Mark your calendar and plan to join us next month for the first installment of our two-part episode!

In the meantime, catch up on all previous episodes of our MAA Digital Series on our MAA website and YouTube Channel.

Greetings from Ann Arbor!
Photos of Katherine Kurtz

Larry Kuhn, associate dean, recently connected with Katherine Kurtz in her hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. As many alumni will remember, Katherine previously served as vice dean of Development at Feinberg for eight years until her retirement in 2012. During her time at Feinberg, Katherine’s influential leadership was marked by a number of successes including $732 million raised, the creation of 48 named scholarships (including an eponymous one), the establishment of 23 endowed professorships, the dedication of the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center, and the development of an expanded alumni and donor giving and volunteerism society (now known as The Founders Society). Katherine spent 22 years at the University of Michigan prior to joining Northwestern and returned home to her native Michigan after retirement.

Thank you to Katherine and Larry for sharing these photos of your reunion!

The Heart’s Knowledge: Collaborating with The Block Museum of Art

Block Outing Photo Collage

On June 27, members of the Feinberg Office of Development and Alumni Relations headed north to our Central campus in Evanston to take in an afternoon exhibit at the Block Museum of Art. The purpose of the outing was two-fold. In addition to viewing an outstanding exhibit that centered on the emotional importance of scientific technologies, the trip allowed us to learn more about the Block and explore ways in which we might partner together in the future. The Block staff kindly provided a guided tour of The Heart’s Knowledge: Science and Empathy in the Art of Dario Robleto exhibit.

The Heart’s Knowledge marks the culmination of Robleto’s five-year engagement as artist-at-large in Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. This exhibition reflects the spirit of that enterprise, expanding conversations around ethics and empathy in scientific fields, and inviting us to look and listen to the life that surrounds us with curiosity and compassion.”

For more information on the exhibit, please view the Block’s website.

Thank you to the Block for hosting our department for this terrific outing!

Sadiya S. Khan ’05, ’09 MD, ’12 GMER, ’14 MSc, ’16 GMEF,

the Magerstadt Professor of Cardiovascular Epidemiology, is the corresponding author on a recent Northwestern Medicine study that found that despite having risk factors for heart disease, only 60 percent of women reported receiving counseling on optimizing their heart health, which includes healthy eating, exercise, and losing weight gained during pregnancy at their six-week postpartum visit between 2016 and 2020. The article was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study is the first to describe contemporary rates of heart-health counseling during postpartum visits for women with heart disease risk factors or who experienced pregnancy complications. To learn more about the study, visit the Feinberg News Center. Congratulations, Dr. Khan!

Sam Weinberg, ’18 PhD, ’19 MD, has been awarded the prestigious Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award for Medical Scientists. Awarded to early-career physician-scientists, the fund “aims to nurture a diverse group of leaders in biomedical sciences to improve human health through education and powering scientific discovery,” providing $700,000 over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral and fellowship training with the early years of faculty service.

The Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Office of Foundation Relations was integral in helping to secure this award. To learn more about the team’s work, please visit their website.

Dr. Weinberg will establish his own laboratory at Feinberg with the award, furthering his research on how changes in the metabolic environment can influence immunity. Dr. Weinberg also will join the Feinberg faculty in the fall as assistant professor of Pathology in addition to his clinical service in clinical immunology. Congratulations, Dr. Weinberg!
