With Pride, From Your Medical Alumni Association

As we commemorate Pride this month and celebrate our LGBTQ community, we are reminded that inclusion and allyship are key for both our peers and the populations we serve.

I have come to realize that being an ally is so much more than working on systems and processes to try and close the gaps that exist in the care we provide. Being an ally is more than supporting a diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative. For me, personally, being an ally is earnestly listening and being a friend, colleague, and supporter, one-on-one. Being an ally is actively pushing for, promoting, and protecting a culture where everyone has a voice, everyone is supported, and everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential based on their individual effort and drive. Being an ally is working every day to be part of a society and culture where, one day, we won’t need allies.

I wish my fellow alumni, friends, and family who identify as LGBTQIA+ a happy Pride Month.

Epidemics in Chicago: What Have We Learned?

We’re thrilled to bring you the newest installment of our MAA Digital Series, from our fantastic host and historian, alum Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD.

Long before the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down, Chicago experienced a number of epidemics that ravaged its citizens. From cholera and dysentery to smallpox and polio, these diseases became a part of daily life for Chicagoans. In this month’s episode, Dr. Gugenheim explores some of these epidemics’ origins, spread, and, in a few fortunate instances, eradication.

Dr. Gugenheim presents “Epidemics in Chicago: What Have We Learned?

Thank you, Dr. Gugenheim!

Wisdom and Wit: The Book of Charlie

Charles H. White, ’30 MD, a self-taught saxophonist and one of the first anesthesiologists in Kansas City, is the subject of the recently-published book, The Book of Charlie: Wisdom from the Remarkable American Life of a 109-Year-Old Man.

From author David Von Drehle, Dr. White and his remarkable story are forever immortalized in this new novel.

About the book:

One of our nation’s most prominent writers finds the truth about how to live a long and happy life in the centenarian next door.

When a veteran Washington journalist moved to Kansas, he met a new neighbor who was more than a century

old. Little did he know that he was beginning a long friendship—and a profound lesson in the meaning of life. Charlie White was no ordinary neighbor. Born before radio, Charlie lived long enough to use a smartphone. When a shocking tragedy interrupted his idyllic boyhood, Charlie mastered survival strategies that reflect thousands of years of human wisdom. Thus armored, Charlie’s sense of adventure carried him on an epic journey across the continent, and later found him swinging across bandstands of the Jazz Age, racing aboard ambulances through Depression-era gangster wars, improvising techniques for early open-heart surgery, and cruising the Amazon as a guest of Peru’s president.

David Von Drehle came to understand that Charlie’s resilience and willingness to grow made this remarkable neighbor a master in the art of thriving through times of dramatic change. As a gift to his children, he set out to tell Charlie’s secrets. The Book of Charlie is a gospel of grit—the inspiring story of one man’s journey through a century of upheaval. The history that unfolds through Charlie’s story reminds you that the United States has always been a divided nation, a questing nation, an inventive nation—a nation of Charlies in the rollercoaster pursuit of a good and meaningful life.

For more information on the book and its author, visit the Simon & Schuster website.

Thank you to Meryl H. Haber ’56, ’59 MS, MD (’13, ’18 GP), for sharing this fascinating read with us!
