MAA Spring Event Recaps

Your MAA was hard at work this spring, hosting events for alumni and friends of the medical school both virtually and in person around the country. We’re grateful for these opportunities to connect with alumni, meet new friends, and share exciting updates with you on your alma mater. Read on to learn more about these terrific events.

Nashville Events

On April 27, Daniel M. Corcos, PhD, professor of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences, led exciting discussions with alumni and friends on aging and the beneficial effects of exercise in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Corcos shared information about the latest research on how aging affects the brain as well as the neuromuscular system.

In advance of his birthday, Dr. Corcos was presented with a commemorative, personalized Nashville Predators jersey in recognition of all that he has done to raise awareness and education about Parkinson’s disease and exercise. The jersey was presented to Dr. Corcos by former National Hockey League player Brent Peterson, founder and chief executive officer of the Peterson Foundation for Parkinson’s, and his wife, Tami. Mr. Peterson is a current advisor and former assistant coach for the Predators.

While in Nashville, Dr. Corcos, along with members of our team, also had the privilege to attend the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research’s Gala and Benefit Concert on April 26 that celebrated the strides that have been made toward curing Parkinson’s and discussed the road that lies ahead.

Thank you to Dr. Corcos, our hosts, and all who joined us at these wonderful events!

Webinar: Digital Health and the Changing Paradigm of Atrial Fibrillation Treatment

On May 2, the MAA was pleased to host a very popular webinar, “Digital Health and the Changing Paradigm of Atrial Fibrillation Treatment,” featuring Rod S. Passman, MD, MSCE, director of the Center for Arrhythmia Research; the Jules J. Reingold Professor of Electrophysiology; and professor of Medicine, Cardiology, and Preventive Medicine.

In his presentation, Dr. Passman shared with us the history of wearable heart monitors and the promise they show in improving health and personalizing medicine for those with atrial fibrillation. Dr. Passman also provided insight into the $37 million National Institutes of Health grant for Feinberg to lead a 100-site, 5,400-patient clinical trial that has the potential to change the way atrial fibrillation —which affects about 35 million people—is treated worldwide. The REACT-AF study will start enrolling participants in June.

Thank you to the 500 people who registered for this event! If you were unable to attend or would just like to revisit the conversation, we invite you to visit our Virtual Event Recording Archives to view the presentation.

A Night With Northwestern in San Francisco

On May 10, in collaboration with the Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA), Feinberg once again hosted a presentation as part of the NAA’s “A Night With Northwestern” series. From our Potocsnak Longevity Institute, outstanding faculty panelists (pictured above, left to right) Farzaneh A. Sorond, MD, PhD; Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, MD, ScM; Frank J. Palella ’83, MD, ’90, ’92 GMER; and Douglas E. Vaughan, MD, tackled questions such as why do some people age faster than others? And since tests can now pinpoint how long an individual will live, do you want to know and what’s next? The presentation touched on how industry focus has shifted from prolonging lifespan to extending “healthspan” and what that might mean for your future healthcare.

Thank you to all of our San Francisco alumni who joined us and to our panelists for an excellent event!

Announcing a New Type of Journal Club
A Message from Joel Shalowitz, MD, ’80 GMER, ’82 MBA

We don’t make medical decisions based solely on opinions and hearsay, so why should we base our assessments about health policy and management on those sources?

Just like in clinical medicine, those two subjects have extensive, peer-reviewed literature that can be used as the basis for informed decisions.

We are exploring interest in an alumni journal club that will be devoted to reading and discussing literature about health policy and management.

I will be the convener of this quarterly activity which will be modeled after a successful journal club conducted at the Kellogg School of Management. I served as a professor and director of the Health Industry Management Program at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management for 28 years and am now an adjunct professor in Preventive Medicine at Feinberg.

If you’re interested in participating, please indicate your interest via this online form.

We hope that you’ll join us!

The hearing brain is vast, engaging how we think, feel, move, and integrate our senses. Nina Kraus ’81 PhD, Northwestern University professor, director of the renowned Brainvolts Lab, and author of the recently published OF SOUND MIND: How Our Brain Constructs a Meaningful Sonic World examines the partnership of sound and brain, showing that the processing of sound drives many of the brain’s core functions and leaves a fundamental imprint on who we are as human beings. Dr. Kraus explores the power of music for hearing every sound as well as the destructive power of noise on cognitive and mental health. She describes why musicians—defined here as anyone who makes music regularly—have measurably better sound minds. The sounds of our lives shape our brains, for better and for worse, and help us build the sonic world we live in.
