February 2023 | Issue No. 67

As the chairs of the Inclusion and Allyship Committee of your Medical Alumni Association Board, we want to recognize Black History Month by highlighting our alumni and sharing the achievements of our current students.

Daniel Hale Williams, 1883 MD, and Emma Ann Reynolds, 1895 MD, are two of our most celebrated medical alumni. We invite you to learn more about their storied careers here. Drs. Williams and Reynolds were the first Black male and female graduates (respectively) to earn MD degrees from Northwestern’s medical school. Feinberg honors their transformative contributions and continues this tradition of excellence by investing in the future changemakers of our Black medical community.

Currently at Feinberg, affinity groups are a way for our medical students to connect with each other. One affinity group we would like to highlight is the Feinberg Chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). Their mission is to support current and future underrepresented minority medical students and address the needs of underserved communities.

On February 4, in partnership with Feinberg's Admissions Office and other medical school affinity groups, the SNMA hosted an application workshop to encourage underrepresented

minority students on a premed track to apply for medical school. The workshop included a medical student panel, MD Admissions panel, interview workshop, and a campus tour.

Hello Again, Naples!

After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Medical Alumni Association was pleased to once again welcome alumni and friends to our Naples brunch held in partnership with the NU Club of Greater Naples at the Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón on February 9.

Thank you to Dr. Daniel Corcos who gave an excellent presentation on “Aging and the Beneficial Effects of Exercise.” For more information on Dr. Corcos’s research, we invite you to check out his episode on the Feinberg Breakthroughs podcast—“Can Exercise Slow Parkinson’s Disease Progression?” Interest in this annual event has become so great, that the number of attendees doubled from our previous brunch in 2019!

The next evening, on February 10, Northwestern Medicine hosted a reception and conversation with Northwestern Medicine leaders about Northwestern Medicine Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute and Potocsnak Longevity Institute at the Royal Poinciana Golf Club.

Mourning Dr. Rebecca Blank

With a heavy heart, we share that Rebecca M. Blank, PhD, former president-elect and professor of economics at Northwestern, passed away on February 17.

Dr. Blank was named Northwestern’s president-elect in October 2021, succeeding Morton Schapiro, PhD. Prior to accepting the role, Dr. Blank served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison until May 2022. However, in July of that same year, she announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer and would step down in order to focus on her health and her family.

Dr. Blank was 67 years old. The Medical Alumni Association extends our deepest sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Blank.

Read more about her life and career on the Northwestern Now website.

If attending in person, join the MAA for the evening’s cocktail reception that we’ll be co-hosting with Northwestern Women in Medicine.
