Alumni Physicians of Feinberg Meet Students

APF22

What do you say to a parent whose child needs to be placed on the heart transplant list? There are no answers, let alone in a medical textbook.

Yet these are the realities physicians in medicine face every day, and some of the things that our latest Alumni Physicians of Feinberg (APF) discussed with current medical students this month.

This December, Danielle McCarthy, ’06 MD, ’10 GMER, ’12 MS; MAA Board Member Elfriede Pahl Schuette, ’83 MD, ’86 GMER, ’00 GMEF; and Ronak M. Patel ’05, ’08 MD, ’13 GMER, each met with a group of about 10-12 students as part of the APF mentorship program connecting medical students with our distinguished alumni.

Students asked featured speakers everything from, “What should we know when deciding whether to go into emergency medicine?” to “What made you keep going on the days you wanted to quit?”

Their questions also reflected the type of physicians they aspire to be: “What can we do as medical students to help with patients suffering from opioid abuse?” to “What advice do you have for medical students who want to improve communication with patients who have lower health literacy in emergency situations?”

Between our alumni and our students, the present and future of medicine are bright. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Special Thanks to Our APFs of December
