Exploring the Tipping Point

On July 13, we were pleased to host a very special webinar—The Tipping Point: How Discoveries in Brain Sciences, Treatment Implementation, and Health Disparities Will Change the Future of Mental Health Care. Sachin Patel, MD, PhD, the Lizzie Gilman Professor and chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, described innovative educational and clinical programs offered by the department and emerging treatments for a variety of conditions. Additionally, he shared plans for new areas of research expansion and insight into how existing nationally-recognized programs could change our understanding of the biological basis for mental illnesses, reduce barriers to care delivery, and ameliorate disparities in mental health care.

If you missed this webinar or would simply like to revisit the conversation, we invite you to explore the Virtual Event Recording Archives on our website.

Rebecca M. Blank Shares Cancer Diagnosis

Steps Down as President-Elect of Northwestern

It is with great sadness we share that President-elect Rebecca M. Blank has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and will be unable to fulfill her role as the 17th president of Northwestern University.

“I do not have the words to express to you how disappointed and sad I am to be telling you this. I was excited to be joining you at Northwestern, a world-class institution that is near and dear to my heart,” she wrote in a message to the Northwestern community.

Dr. Blank was on the faculty of the Northwestern Economics Department from 1989 to 1999. She also served as director of the Joint Center for Poverty Research and co-director of the Northwestern/University of Chicago Interdisciplinary Training Program in Poverty, Race, and Underclass Issues.
The Board of Trustees has asked President Morton Schapiro to remain in his role as president until a successor is named. Read more about this development on the Northwestern Now website.

Our thoughts are with Dr. Blank and her family during this difficult time.
