Celebrating Pride Month

In honor of Pride Month, the Medical Alumni Association (MAA) Board Inclusion and Allyship Committee would like to celebrate and support the LGBTQIA+ community.

As chairs of the committee on your MAA Board, we are proud to honor and celebrate those who identify as LGBTQIA+. The committee’s focus is to foster a spirit of loyalty, professional interaction, mentoring, and philanthropy among our medical community made up of alumni, students, and faculty. Our work on the Inclusion and Allyship Committee enhances this focus to advocate for and mentor our diverse student and alumni population who represent experiences of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, age, socioeconomic status, and/or physical ability.

This month, we celebrate and uplift the LGBTQIA+ voices of our friends, family, and alumni worldwide. While it is a celebration, it also is a reminder that there is still work that needs to be done to achieve acceptance, inclusion, and health equity.

We encourage you to show your support of the LGBTQIA+ NU community and celebrate love this month and every day.

Javier Guevara, ’12 MD

Darren Wethers, ’88 MD

Commemorating Juneteenth

Juneteenth, sometimes referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865. On this day, the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued on January 1, 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln, was fully put into effect when some of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned that the Civil War had ended.

Northwestern recognized Juneteenth as an official University holiday beginning this year (observed on Monday, June 20). To learn more about Juneteenth and this commemoration, read more on the Northwestern Now website.

Calling All Women in Medicine!

M4 Kate Smith is working with Eve Feinberg, MD, ’04 GMER, on the Women in Medicine Fertility and Family Building study. Recently published in the JAMA Network Open, this survey was developed based on 32 hours of focus groups with women attendings. They are hoping to get responses from 10,000 women in medicine across the country. Data collected will be used to better the lives of women in medicine by advocating for policy change regarding insurance coverage for infertility, egg freezing, reducing bias, addressing burnout, and more.

Muhammad Mutawakkil, MD, ’22 GMER; Clarence Woods, Jr., ’64 MD, ’72 GMER; Randall C. Morgan, Jr., MD, ’73 GMER, ’74 GMEF, MBA (back row, left to right), pictured along with Erik C. Trailblazers at Northwestern and in their profession alike, each of them is passing a torch to the next generation as they continue to fight for more diversity and inclusion in their chosen field, which is currently less than 2 percent Black.” Clyde Yancy, MD, MSc, vice dean for Diversity and Inclusion and chief of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine (front row, right), toasted the group and celebrated their tremendous accomplishments as alumni trailblazers in orthopaedics. Congratulations to all!
