Alumni Weekend 2022:
What a Celebration in Chicago!

Record-Breaking Attendance

Thank you to the over 850 alumni, guests, faculty, students, and staff who joined us for a record-breaking Alumni Weekend 2022!

Congratulations to all of our alumni who celebrated milestone reunions during this special year. We were thrilled to welcome back our 2022 reunion classes, as well as our 2021 and 2020 reunion classes for their postponed celebrations. It was an honor to induct our 50-year reunion classes (1970, 1971, and 1972) into the Half Century Club. Our partners at the Northwestern University Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences Alumni Association were also pleased to welcome alumni back for their first in-person Alumni Weekend since the beginning of the pandemic. We hope that you enjoyed reminiscing and reconnecting with your classmates. The weekend had something for everyone—from forums and walking tours to events such as the Women in Medicine tea, the all-alumni Celebrate in Chicago party, and our Half Century Club and reunion class dinners. Read more about Alumni Weekend in the Feinberg News Center. If you couldn’t make it back to Chicago, or if you simply want to relive the memories from that weekend, view our Alumni Weekend Photo Album.

If you ever have any questions about Alumni Weekend or want to get more involved with your reunion, please reach out to us.

We look forward to seeing you next year at Alumni Weekend 2023!

Hats Off to Dr. Land

In celebration of graduation, we recognize William Land, ’87 MD, ’88 GMER, who recently gave a multifaceted gift to support commencement regalia and tassels for our graduating medical students.
To show appreciation for the medical education he received at Northwestern and the foundation it set for his career as a forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Land has committed to supporting Northwestern
University Feinberg School of Medicine students and residents who will follow in his path. In addition to the regalia and tassels, Dr. Land supports Feinberg’s annual white coat campaign; scholarships in honor of Jack Snarr, ’67 PhD, and James Webster, ’56 MD, ’60 GMER, ’64 GMEF (a former classmate of Dr. Land’s father, Richard Land, ’56 MD); and luncheons for residents and rotating medical students in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Land also has documented a generous bequest to Feinberg to establish a fellowship or professorship in forensic psychiatry. Read more about Dr. Land on our website.

Thank you, Dr. Land, for your incredible support of the medical school and our graduating M4s!

The article highlights how “Through a span of 85 years, more than 5,100 graduates in the various nursing programs affiliated with the University have provided health and nursing services to many generations.” This month and every month, we honor the incredible contributions that you have made to the field through your dedication, innovation, and phenomenal care.

Congrats Are in Order!

David M. Louis E. Fazen, III, ’65, ’69 MD, MPH, has been awarded the Henry Ingersoll Bowditch Award for Public Health by the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS). The Ingersoll Bowditch Award is “bestowed annually to a Massachusetts physician who demonstrates creativity, commendable citizenship, initiative, innovation, and leadership in the public health and advocacy fields.” Committed to advocating for public health, Dr. Fazen is a pediatrician, founder of the Global Health Committee at the MMS, and four-decade faculty member at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. He previously served as chair of the MMS Public Health Committee and currently serves on the Old Sturbridge Village Public Charter School Board of Directors and as secretary of the Board of the Public Health Museum in Tewksbury, Massachusetts. Congratulations, Dr. Fazen!

Christina L. Jenkins, ’00 MD, was recently named to the board of Help at Home, one of the nation’s largest homecare providers with over 30,000 caregivers. Dr. Jenkins is a venture investor and adviser who uses technology and trusted relationships to improve health at scale, with focus on evidence-based technologies that better meet the health needs of women, the aging, and other underserved populations. Separately, Dr. Jenkins is a national advisor to Manatt Health, a division of Manatt Phelps and Phillips. Congratulations, Dr. Jenkins!
Elenuté Nicola, ’67 MD, recently authored a new book of poetry, The Villanelle Book: Love Poems. The book description states that “The language of love and longing speaks to the soul. The classic villanelle form is the perfect vehicle for such sentiments. The word villanelle comes from the Italian vilannela, which was a rustic song or dance. In France in the late 16th century, the villanelle evolved into poetry...The theme is still often pastoral or related to love.” As Dr. Nicola shares, “I wrote my first one, the first in this book, after reading about the villanelle form. It so perfectly allowed me to express what I wanted to say that I was hooked. The ideas for many of them came to me at night, when I logically thought I'd like to sleep, but the musical, repetitive, villanelle was waiting for me to find those last few words.” The book is available for purchase from Amazon. Congratulations, Dr. Nicola!

Timothy A. Sanborn, ’77 MD (’03 P), recently authored “Passing the Stethoscope,” published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Cardiology. The article is a short story recollection from Dr. Sanborn’s first year at Northwestern University Medical School on how he, using the skills that he had recently gained as an M1, was able to examine and diagnose the breathing problem that his own father (a surgeon) was experiencing. The article may be read on the JAMA Cardiology website. Congratulations, Dr. Sanborn!

Alliah Turner ’22 MPO, is the first-ever recipient of the Ken Harris Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Scholarship at Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center. The scholarship was established by an anonymous donor to honor the 30+ year career, service, and dedication of Ken Harris and to provide support for students from marginalized backgrounds who are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Congratulations, Alliah!
Allyson Wessells ’99 MPT, developed a presentation for the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy Annual Conference titled “Latching On: How Physical Therapists Can Help Infants Achieve Breastfeeding as a Movement Milestone.” The presentation highlighted research she initiated with colleagues from Ohio University in “Maternal Self-Confidence and Breastfeeding After Participating in a Program About Infant Prone Positioning,” published in the American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing. As a physical therapist (PT), International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), and co-owner of a private practice in Columbus, Ohio, she endeavors to engage IBCLCs to know more about movement as related to human lactation, and PTs to know more about breastfeeding as related to human development. Congratulations, Allyson!
