The Emotional Lives of Black Women

In celebration of Black History Month, the Northwestern University Medical Alumni Association Women in Medicine Subcommittee and Inclusion and Allyship Subcommittee hosted a very special event on February 17, The Emotional Lives of Black Women, with associate professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Inger E. Burnett-Zeigler, ’09 PhD. This event was moderated by MAA Board member Sabrina Kendrick ’86, MD, ’95 GMEF.

In this presentation, Dr. Burnett-Zeigler discussed themes from her book Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen: The Emotional Lives of Black Women. She examined how Black women’s strength is intimately tied to their unacknowledged suffering and explored how trauma and adversity have led to deep emotional pain and shaped how they walk through the world.

Thank you to all who attended! For more information on this topic or any of our events, please contact us at medalumevents@northwestern.edu.

Women physicians face unique challenges and obstacles throughout their professional careers. These challenges may affect leadership development and opportunities for women in medicine resulting in a gender gap in the governance of academic medical centers. This fourth annual symposium will help to identify the obstacles that contribute to gender inequity and start the discourse to bridging it while shedding light on gender disparities and sharing experiences and tools to overcome the barriers that exist in medicine for female physicians, so as to empower and create a network to lean upon.
