Jessica L. LeJeune, ’12 DPT, developed an on-demand webinar through the American Physical Therapy Association Section on Pelvic Health titled “Acute COVID-19 and Respiratory Failure in Pregnancy: Physical Therapy Management.” Dr. LeJeune identified the need for specialized care of these patients during the COVID-19 pandemic through her acute care work in women’s health. Dr. LeJeune developed this course to help other clinicians provide evidence-based care for this highly specialized population. Congratulations, Dr. LeJeune!

Jay A. Perman ’68, ’72 MD, is chancellor of the University System of Maryland. On January 7, 2022, a team of surgeons at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) performed the first transplant of a genetically engineered pig heart into a human. The xenotransplantation was completed on a 57-year-old patient with terminal heart disease determined to be ineligible for a human heart transplant. With the patient’s consent, the UMSOM team sought a “compassionate use” authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration. The outcome of the transplant will provide more research on the possibility of xenotransplantation being an alternative to future shortages in human organs. Read more on the UMSOM website. Congratulations, Dr. Perman and UMSOM!
