Two Frightfully Fun Reasons to Celebrate

Each October, we’re privileged to have the opportunity to shine a light on two of our amazing alumni groups. We honor our physical therapist (PT) alumni during National Physical Therapy Month for their contributions to the field as they work to improve and save lives through physical therapy.

We also honor our physician assistant (PA) alumni during Physician Assistant Week, October 6–12, recognizing the profession and their essential contributions to health and healthcare.

We celebrate both of these incredible alumni groups for their service and dedication to the betterment of human health—thank you for all that you do.

Thrilling Achievements!

Robert J. Havey, ’80 MD, ’83 GMER, ’84 GMEF, was recently honored for his dedication and transformative contributions to the field of global health with the naming of the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Northwestern University Trustees and alumni Patrick G. Ryan and Shirley W. Ryan made a historic gift to name and endow the institute. In 2008, Dr. Havey established the Global Health Initiative to expand global health experiences for Northwestern medical students, educate the next generation of global health leaders, provide clinical care in low- and middle-income countries, and fund research projects in global
health issues. After merging with Northwestern’s existing Center for Global Health in 2019, the institute expanded all these activities and has grown to over 200 faculty working on a broad range of global health activities. Under Dr. Havey’s leadership, Northwestern now has a higher percentage of medical students going on global health rotations than any other medical school in the United States. Dr. Havey is deputy director of the newly-named Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health, director and founder of the Global Health Initiative Fund, and clinical professor of Medicine (General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics) at Feinberg. Read the full story in the Feinberg News Center. Congratulations, Dr. Havey!

Susan Davis ’77 PT will make history as she has authored the first animal PT research paper published in a PT journal (as opposed to veterinary journals). Her article, titled “Management of Medial Patellar Luxation in Small Dogs and Cats: An Investigation into the Use of Manual 3D Patellar Repositioning Technique,” will be published in the October 2021 issue of Orthopedic Physical Therapy Practice, a publication of the Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy. Among the co-authors is fellow NUPTHMS alum Donna Frownfelter ’69 PT. Ms. Davis developed this technique which will be described in the article and can be viewed on her YouTube channel, entitled “Joycare Media.” Congratulations, Ms. Davis!

Priya U. Kumthekar, MD, ’08 GMER, ’11 GMER, ’12 GMEF, engineered a novel therapy with fellow Northwestern Medicine investigators to improve progression-free and overall survival for patients with newly diagnosed malignant gliomas. The results from their phase 1 clinical trial were recently published in The Lancet Oncology. A neuro-oncologist at Northwestern Medicine and brain tumor researcher at the Lou and Jean Malnati Brain Tumor Institute at Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, Dr. Kumthekar is the lead investigator in the trial, a first-of-its-kind nucleic acid-based drug that targets glioblastoma. Dr. Kumthekar created the first CNS metastases program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 2013, and she also was the first recipient of the Latimer Fellowship Fund. Congratulations, Dr. Kumthekar!

Richard B. Lanman, ’81 MD, was recently appointed to the board of directors of CirculoGene, Inc., a liquid biopsy company transforming precision medicine. In 2019, Dr. Lanman retired from Guardant Health, Inc., a liquid biopsy company performing genomics testing in cancer patients, where he served as global chief medical officer. Having coauthored over 120 peer-reviewed scientific papers, he also serves on the board of directors of Biolase, Inc., and as an advisor for Forward Health, Inc., Glympse Bio, Inc., and Teiko Bio, Inc. Congratulations, Dr. Lanman!

Dr. Wickless also previously served as clinical faculty at Feinberg, Loyola University, and the University of Texas Southwestern. Congratulations, Dr. Wickless!

Ernest Wollin, ’58 MD, PE, FACR (Emeritus), president and chief engineer of Wollin Ventures, Inc., a Florida-licensed engineering corporation that develops intellectual property, particularly for magnetic resonance applications, has been practicing teleradiology part-time for National Radiology Solutions. During Dr. Wollin’s career, he has conducted prolific personal research and oversaw the pursuit of a number of patents held by Wollin Ventures. Join the Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA) and Bonnie Spring, professor of Preventive Medicine, Psychiatry, and Psychology and director of the Institute for Public Health and Medicine’s Center for Behavior and Health for a discussion of the health consequences of aging and obesity, and whether digital therapeutics have a role in managing the obesity epidemic.

The Half Century Club invites you to join Emily J. Rogalski, ’07 PhD, professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and associate director of the Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, for a fascinating presentation.

On average, memory abilities decline with aging. However, there are some individuals we call SuperAgers, who seem to resist age-related changes in memory. For more than 10 years, Dr. Rogalski has been leading the Northwestern SuperAging Research Program, which has a goal of identifying genetic, biologic, and psychosocial factors that contribute to living long and living well. In this presentation, she will highlight Northwestern’s contributions to research in this area and its relevance for healthy aging and Alzheimer's disease.

The SuperAgers study was recently awarded a $20 million grant from the National Institute on Aging to establish an international multi-center SuperAging consortium coordinated through Northwestern University. Northwestern Medicine’s SuperAger Research Program will expand beyond its Chicago roots to include sites across the United States and one in Canada.
