Impact in the Community

Dr. Ronald T. Ackermann, Dr. Ruchi S. Gupta, and Dr. Darius Tandon led a discussion about the presence of IPHAM in many of our Chicago communities. Their presentation underscored how healthcare improvements are being made as a result of this involvement and their direct correlation to service, research, and policy.

“That Was Then, This Is Now: Women Firsts”
Featuring
Joseph J. Gugenheim Jr., ’72 MD

The Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Medical Alumni Association Women in Medicine subcommittee and Half Century Club invite you to an exciting Zoom event next month, featuring another installment in our virtual “That Was Then, This is Now” series!

Tuesday, September 14, 2021
4:00–5:00 p.m. CST

Dr. Gugenheim's presentation will highlight the careers of nine women who were pioneering physicians. All of these women faced discrimination and each broke racial and gender barriers to overcome huge obstacles. Each was the first in her field. Their achievements brought national and international recognition. Their accomplishments may have seemed impossible during their lives; years later, we still admire their achievements.

See the “Upcoming Events” portion of this newsletter below for more information and to register.

Pearls of Wisdom

Reflections From Our Half Century Club Members

In this “Pearls of Wisdom” section of the newsletter, we share reflections, words of advice, anecdotes, and tales of the storied careers of our Half Century Club alumni members.

In this month's feature, we’re pleased to share a reflection from Marshall S. Sparberg ’57, ’60 MD (pictured above):

When I graduated Northwestern Medical School in 1960, the keynote speaker was Dr. Charles Best, who codiscovered insulin. He told us that despite the advances in medicine, there are always new problems and diseases. Or, as he put it so succinctly, ‘The mortality is still 100%.’

Thank you, Dr. Sparberg!

Are you a member of our Half Century Club, our esteemed alumni who graduated 50+ years ago? Then we want to hear from you!

Send us your "Pearls of Wisdom" for inclusion in an upcoming newsletter.
