Spotlight On...Our Nursing Alumni

In this new feature, we will highlight the biography of one of our incredible nursing alumni. We are grateful for the opportunity to shine a light on their tremendous professional and personal accomplishments and applaud their incredible achievements as they reflect on their lives and careers.

If you would like to share a recent accomplishment or career reflection, please contact us at medalum@northwestern.edu.

This month, we are pleased to feature Sara Armstrong ’88, who shared with us that "Northwestern provided an amazing experience and foundation for my growth as a clinician and leader in health care, and I would love to reconnect to my peers from NU."

Sara Armstrong was promoted to senior vice president at Ontrak, Inc. in July. Sara received her bachelor of science in Nursing in 1988 after starting her undergraduate work on the Evanston campus and transferring to the downtown campus to pursue a nursing major. After graduation from Northwestern, she worked on the 14th floor of Wesley Pavilion in Hematology/Oncology/Bone

Marrow Transplant. Sara went on to pursue graduate studies in Nursing Administration at the University of California, San Francisco and launched her leadership career as the associate director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Children’s Hospital, Oakland.

Over the latter part of her 30+ year career, Sara has focused on the delivery and management of programs to drive sustainable behavior change, improve quality of life, and reduce health care costs. For the past three years at Ontrak, Sara has led teams to deliver their mission to “to help improve the health and save the lives of as many people as possible.” Sara’s team includes over 250 Care Coaches (a blend of nurses and certified health coaches) who help members with untreated behavioral health conditions to receive treatment and learn to self-manage their chronic medical conditions to improve their health and quality of life and reduce unnecessary health care utilization.

Since her hire, Sara has overseen tremendous growth of her team to support the mission of Ontrak. Ontrak has doubled the number of enrolled members four times since August 2017—increasing the number of members in treatment from 1,100 to 14,000. To support these members, Sara has grown her team of coaches, supervisors, and leaders from a size of 42 to nearly 350. In addition to growth, Ontrak reports high member retention in their 52-week program and consistently reports excellent NPS member satisfaction scores with coaching (>75).

Sara and her partner, Scot, have three grown children (and several dogs!) and live in Saugatuck, Michigan. She enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and paddle-boarding.

Our thanks to Sara Armstrong for this wonderful update!
