"Interview with the NMO"

We're thrilled to share the newest episode of the MAA digital series from our favorite historian, alumnus Joseph Gugenheim, ’72 MD!

This month’s installment is an interview with members of the Northwestern Medical Orchestra (NMO). Founded in Spring 2018 and comprised of students, alumni, faculty, residents, researchers, and staff from the Northwestern community, the NMO shares their music with patients, friends, and the wider medical community through a series of in-person performances in and around campus throughout the year. Stay tuned at the end of the interview for an excerpt from their performance of "Stormy Seas for Symphony Orchestra," by Aroop Kar, MD, ’18 GMEF.

Northwestern Alumni Book Club

The Northwestern Alumni Association (NAA) invites you to join the Northwestern University Alumni Book Club.

In this online community, alumni and friends can connect with each other and read books from a range of genres, including fiction, memoir, lifelong learning, and more.

There is no cost to participate—you just need a copy of the book. The book club will meet through a private online forum where members can discuss the current selection.

Participate in the discussion of the NAA's next book selection, "How to Be an Antiracist" by Ibram X. Kendi.

"Ibram X. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America—but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. In 'How to Be an Antiracist,' Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it."

To learn more about the book club and to register, visit the NAA Book Club website.

Congrats Are in Order!

Katherine V. Nichols, ’85 MD, recently retired and shared this update for her fellow reunion classmates with us:

“Greetings to my NUMS ’85 classmates, 35 years down the road. My news: I have retired as of the end of 2019 (remember, I am 6-10 years older than most of you). Turns out it was just in time, meaning that I am watching COVID-19 unfold from the sidelines while keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

After graduating with this wonderful class, I moved on to a Pediatrics residency at Yale New Haven Hospital followed by a fellowship in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine at Yale. From 1991-1996, I paid back my Air Force scholarship, working as a neonatologist at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. While there, I was also on the clinical faculty at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Upon leaving the military, I chose to stay in Virginia, my home state, and have been in the big town/small city of Lynchburg since. By 2006, the challenges of working 36-hour days in the intensive care nursery as a single, widowed parent became too much, so with my kids moving into middle school and high school, I decided to make the transition to general pediatrics which allowed for a more flexible schedule. I retired from an 8-person pediatrics practice.

My kids are now adults. Ben is an audio engineer in Los Angeles. Jeff is completing a PhD in biomedical engineering at Virginia Tech. No grandkids, one granddog.

Other than some volunteer work and as much socially distanced hiking as my dog and I can get in, my retirement has been spent in COVID-19 lockdown. Not what I expected, but then, 2020 has not been what any of us expected.

The four years we spent together at NUMS (as it was known) were excellent, leading to a fulfilling career and life. I wish you all the very best as you move forward with whatever challenges life and medicine bring. Retirement is a good thing!”

Congratulations, Dr. Nichols!
