/  Fall 2023

Dear friends and colleagues,

Welcome to our fall 2023 newsletter and the new academic year. The largest first-year class of aspiring engineers has just started at Northwestern, and we look forward to many joining CEE. But, as you will read below, we also want to celebrate the 2023 graduates and the career of Professor Emeritus Joseph Schofer.

We highlight recent research accomplishments of our faculty and students. Professor Alessandro Rotta Loria published work detailing both the potential hazards and opportunities of underground warming on urban structures and energy demand, which was widely reported in the popular press. Gianluca Cusatis and his students are developing new materials and methods, both computational and robotic, for the large-scale 3D printing of structures. Erica Hartmann joined her colleagues in issuing a warning about the indiscriminate use of disinfectants.

There are many new, exciting changes being made to the Architectural Engineering and Design program under the leadership of Professor Giorgia Chinazzo. We also include a profile of two AED faculty, Chicago architects Luis Collado and Jose Luis de la Fuente, whose firm recently won the design competition for the new National Museum in Jinju, South Korea.

Join us in congratulating CEE faculty who have received awards and recognition for their excellence in research. Among them, Yonggang Huang was elected to the Royal Societies of London and Canada. We are also extremely proud of the achievements of our students, including Anjali Thota, Colleen O’Brien, and Subhadeep Pal.

Thanks for your continued support and interest.
