Looking Back on 2022

Dear colleagues and friends of Northwestern Computer Science:

It has been another exciting year at Northwestern.

Launching Transdisciplinary Partnerships

We celebrated the launch of transformative, transdisciplinary partnerships, including:

A collaboration with the UL Research Institutes' Digital Safety Research Institute, CASMI is led by Kristian Hammond.
A collaboration between Northwestern Engineering and Northwestern’s School of Communication, HCI+D is codirected by Liz Gerber, Darren Gergle, and Bryan Pardo.
Site director Aravindan Vijayaraghavan leads the NSF Harnessing the Data Revolution TRIPODS Phase II institute.
Jointly housed within the Northwestern Buffett Institute for Global Affairs and Northwestern Engineering, NSAIL is directed by V.S. Subrahmanian.

Focusing on Collaboration

We aim to expand the breadth and depth of our work in computing and its impact on society. In 2022, our faculty and scholars collaborated on a vibrant set of activities, workshops, and events within the department, across the University, and with partner institutions.

IDEAL Challenges in Data Economics Workshop

Jason Hartline and Zhaoran Wang organized the Fall 2022 IDEAL Special Program on Data Economics, which aimed to define novel research directions with a particular focus on eliciting information.

Wei Chen

During a recent joint workshop that I co-hosted with Wei Chen, Wilson-Cook Professor in Engineering Design and professor and chair of mechanical engineering, our faculty and postdocs discussed opportunities for research collaboration.

In addition, CASMI recently hosted a virtual panel on Defining ‘Safety’ in Artificial Intelligence, and Simone Campanoni and Nikos Hardavellas co-chaired the five-day MICRO 2022 conference in October.

Welcoming New Faculty

(Left to right): Andrew Crotty, Joseph Hummel, Sam Kriegman, Miklos Racz, Zach Wood-Doughty

We welcomed several new faculty members to Northwestern CS. Tenure-track faculty members Andrew Crotty, Sam Kriegman, and Miklos Racz, in addition to teaching-track faculty members Joseph Hummel and Zach Wood-Doughty, joined recent hires Emma Alexander, Sruti Bhagavatula, Andrew Fano, and Xinyu Xing.

(Left to right): Joshua Glaser, Duri Long, Malcolm MacIver

We are also excited to work with our new affiliated faculty members.

Joshua Glaser (Feinberg School of Medicine)
Duri Long (School of Communication)
Malcolm MacIver (Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering)

Department Growth

Our new faculty have created innovative courses and created a wealth of research opportunities for our students. Read about the department’s research growth in areas like data science and cybersecurity in the fall 2022 issue of Northwestern Engineering magazine.

Northwestern CS Faculty of Instruction

Our academic programs continue to grow rapidly. Our PhD in computer science program now admits between 32-35 new students each year. Our core master’s degree program admits 50-55 students annually, and 35-38 students join Northwestern’s Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence (MSAI) program each year.

Our undergraduate program now serves more than 1,000 CS majors in the McCormick School of Engineering and the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Recent changes to the computer science undergraduate curricula increases flexibility and expands the scope of approved course options.

In the spring issue of Northwestern Engineering magazine, you can read about how our teaching-track faculty are fostering a broad community of undergraduate students with varied goals and interests.

Honors and Awards
I am incredibly proud of the hard work of our faculty, postdocs, staff, and students, and the awards and recognitions they have received. A few notable accolades include:

Christos Dimoulas and Annie Liang received NSF CAREER awards
Fourth-year student Amil Dravid was recognized as a finalist by the CRA Undergraduate Award selection committee
Jason Hartline earned an ESA Test of Time Award
V.S. Subrahmanian was named a Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association
Xiao Wang won the ACM CCS Distinguished Paper Award
PhD student Nick Wanninger won the Best Artifact Award at EuroSys 2022

Thanks to the Northwestern CS staff, who work incredibly hard to deliver the highest quality service. Thanks also to everyone who supports the department, including industry partners such as Adobe, our alumni, our donors, Northwestern Engineering, and the University.

Best wishes for a wonderful 2023!

Samir Khuller
Peter and Adrienne Barris Chair and Professor
Department of Computer Science
McCormick School of Engineering

Northwestern Alumni Association and Northwestern Engineering present:

Who to Marry, How to Cook and Where to Buy Gas: Solving Dilemmas of Daily Life, One Algorithm at a Time

Date: Wednesday, January 18, 2023
Time: 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. CST
Virtual via Zoom

Algorithms are precise steps that tell a computation device how to act and make decisions. Samir Khuller will introduce the notion of algorithm design and share a variety of elementary examples to demonstrate how computer scientists solve problems.
