Dear friends and colleagues, This year's spring quarter was perhaps one of the most challenging ones in recent history. In late March, we pivoted to basically move all of our classes online. I am delighted to report 19 computer science courses received among the highest scores in McCormick in an evaluation survey of courses that successfully made the transition. In addition, we kicked off a new CS Tech Talk Series that invites industry veterans to talk about their lives and careers to our students, and we successfully hosted our first CS Virtual Graduation Reception for students and families via Gather.Town. Our researchers continue to work tirelessly to find solutions that make our world better, safer, and healthier for everyone. We are increasing our efforts for inclusion and diversity, which are highlighted in a new webpage created by the CS Faculty Diversity Committee. Striving toward equal justice, Kris Hammond is leading a team in developing an artificial intelligence platform that provides users with access to information and insights hidden inside federal court records. A team led by Josiah Hester received a National Science Foundation RAPID grant to develop smart face masks embedded with battery-free sensors that assess proper fit and monitor health. And, finally, I want to highlight a recent faculty teaching award, our new faculty hires, and our newest postdoctoral fellows. This summer we have been in full planning mode to prepare for multiple scenarios this fall, ranging from some courses being entirely online to various hybrid modes of instruction. I am also grateful to the faculty who are running summer courses and various reading groups to provide academic enrichment to our students. I hope you all continue to have a safe and healthy summer.

Inclusion is a core value within our department. We strive to set an example as educators, as colleagues, and as researchers to work to combat systemic biases that can reduce diversity within computer science. To highlight these efforts, the CS Faculty Diversity Committee has created a webpage outlining our initiatives, student groups, resources, news, and events.

Our department welcomes four new tenure-track, jointly appointed (CS+X) faculty members and two teaching faculty members as part of its ambitious hiring initiative. The additions will allow an expansion of course offerings and additional courses for non-CS majors.

Mohammed Alam, David Demeter, Jinshuo Dong, and Emily Wall will join us as postdoctoral research fellows this year. They bring a variety of research interests and backgrounds, including visualization recommendation systems, mathematics of computation, neural network language models, and artificial intelligence and machine learning.
