A Fond Farewell and a Warm Welcome...

At our spring Medical Alumni Association (MAA) Board of Directors Meeting on April 29, the presidential gavel was passed. We saluted Bruce Scharschmidt '68, '70 MD, for his outstanding service as MAA President. Dr. Scharschmidt’s dedication and visionary leadership has been essential in solidifying the foundation of the MAA and cultivating the exceptional growth that led to its current state. We thank you, Dr. Scharschmidt.

It is with great pride that we now welcome Jim Kelly, '73 MD, '07 MBA, as our 14th MAA president. In his previous role as chair of the MAA Engagement Committee, Dr. Kelly was instrumental in the national and compositional diversification of the MAA board membership.

Congratulations to you both!

Congrats Are in Order!

Diane E. Meier, '77 MD, director of the Center to Advance Palliative Care in New York, was awarded the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine Distinguished Medical Alumni Award at Alumni Weekend 2017. Created in 1998 by then-vice president and dean of the medical school Harvey Colten, this award is presented annually to recognize an alumnus/a whose outstanding professional achievements bring honor to the medical school and merit special recognition. Read a recent profile on Dr. Meier in Northwestern Medicine Magazine. Congratulations, Dr. Meier!
Kenneth Poole, '08 MD, has been named medical director of patient experience at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. In this role, he will serve as chair of the Arizona Patient Experience Subcommittee. Dr. Poole will partner with the Arizona patient experience program manager to engage in improvement partnerships with the inpatient and outpatient practices, survey data review, and educate in order to improve patient satisfaction. Dr. Poole is a consultant in the Division of Community Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, and a member of both the Arizona/Florida Health Information Coordinating Subcommittee and the Arizona Space and Capital Committee. He also is on the admissions and executive committees of the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, where he chairs diversity and inclusion efforts. Dr. Poole resides in Phoenix, Arizona, with his wife and three children. Congratulations, Dr. Poole!
Kenneth G. Busch, MD, '75 GME, was elected to the Illinois State Medical Society Board of Trustees during its recent annual meeting. On staff at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, Dr. Busch is board certified in psychiatry and is a distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He served on the Council on Medical Services and currently holds membership in the American Medical Association, the Illinois Psychiatric Society, where he is a past president, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law. Dr. Busch is a member of and has served in various leadership roles at the Chicago Medical Society as well, including as president from 2014-2015. Congratulations, Dr. Busch!
John Nanninga, '63 MD, '70 GME, and MAA board member, recently authored a book titled “The Gland Illusion,” published by McFarland & Company. The book explores the early history (late 19th to early 20th century) of the discovery of glands and their use in rejuvenation. The subject matter focuses on the use of the sex glands and how they might make a person younger. Despite the pseudoscientific nature of the practices, the work was a stimulus to the eventual discovery and use of testosterone and estrogen. Congratulations, Dr. Nanninga!
Ann Jayaram, MD, '15 GME, was recently profiled on the website "Inspiring Women in Surgery." Dr. Jayaram is an oculoplastic surgeon in the Bay Area. Congratulations, Dr. Jayaram!
